What is Heritage tourism?

Postby kiddy on Tue Oct 05, 2010 8:57 am

Cultural heritage tourism (or just heritage tourism) is a branch of tourism oriented towards the cultural heritage of the location where tourism is occurring. Culture has always been a major object of travel, as the development of the Grand Tour from the 16th century onwards attests. In the 20th century, some people have claimed, culture ceased to be the objective of tourism: tourism is now culture.

Hello,
Heritage tourism involves visiting historical or industrial sites that may include old canals, railways, battlegrounds, etc. The overall purpose is to gain an appreciation of the past. It also refers to the marketing of a location to members of a diaspora who have distant family roots there.

Thanks

I think heritage tourism is mainly about traveling to a place and being willing to fully embrace yourself in the culture and heritage of the place. Discovering the "spirit" of the place or what truly makes a site unique in its own way is the key to real heritage tourism in my eyes. Experiencing the everyday life is just as equally important as visiting every major tourist attraction in each city, just so that the full identity is explored without resorting to seeking out consumer services to allow us to retreat back to what is "comfortable" in our own lifestyles. If anyone is interested in this kind of perspective, check out this link: http://www.lifebeyondtourism.com/en that has similar blogs and a photoblog on traveling and tourism based on values, culture, and heritage.

Cultural tourism offers genuine opportunities for both the cultural and tourism industries to work together and, over time, to build business, stimulate economic growth, showcase our country's resources and encourage international and domestic visitors to explore America by experiencing the richness of its culture.
