The town was recognised as a city by the English Crown if it had a diocesan cathedral within its limits. the city in Cheshire , England is the best in England. the Chester was one of the last towns in England to fall to the Normans in the Norman conquest.

If you are considering York or Lincoln you will find Beverley even more captivating for photography. With two market squares and medieval churches, cobbled streets it is a beauty. See some of my pictures in the travellers articles.

Speaking personally, I don't like the word authentic. There is no where that I would consider artificial; all UK towns are authentic. We also use the word cities somewhat sparingly. We call most of them towns.

What's the best city in England for a tourist to visit?
I am american and I want to visit England. What is the best city to see and what's the best city for nightlife? I heard Birmingham was the best city for nightlife in the West Midlands.

Manchester - further north, great nightlife, cracking people, a very attractive city and, like Brighton, more independent shops rather than the generic chain stores you find everywhere.
